Description:

A Suquamish Indian chief describes his people's respect and love for the earth, and concern for its destruction. Based on a speech attributed (perhaps spuriously) to Chief Seattle, ca. 1854, as reported by Henry A. Smith in the Seattle Sunday star, Oct. 29, 1887. Cf. article in Prologue magazine, v. 18, no. 1 (spring 1985); available in electronic form on the web site of the National archives.
