Description:

"Between 1949 and 1999, the life and works of D. H. Lawrence have inspired ten feature films: nine based on works of fiction and one based on biography. In D. H. Lawrence: Fifty Years on Film, Louis K. Greiff examines these films as adaptations, as cultural or historical documents, and as independent works of art.". "In his chronicle of the five-decade history of filming or attempting to film Lawrence's life and works, Greiff examines the backgrounds and personal views of the filmmakers and casts. He assesses critical responses to the Lawrence films, including initial and later reviews as well as longer studies. He looks at available Lawrence filmscripts, noting that they often are remarkably different from the finished films.". "Greiff also evaluates the films as social and cultural documents, showing why they had such an effect on filmmakers and audiences during certain phases in American and Anglo-European history. Significantly, the films were not spread evenly throughout these decades but appeared in clusters."--BOOK JACKET.
