Description:

Hailed as the most successful exhibition of photography ever assembled, 'The Family of Man' opened at The Museum of Modern Art in January 1955. Presenting what Edward Steichen referred to as a 'collective portrait' of humanity, the exhibition featured 503 photographs from 68 countries, 273 of which were taken by amateur photographers. As the permanent embodiment of this monumental exhibition, this book reproduces every one of the images that Steichen described as 'a mirror of the essential oneness of mankind throughout the world. Photographs made in all parts of the world, of the gamut of life from birth to death.' This hardback edition is published to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this landmark exhibition and book.
